Mayor of Kingstown Season 4 Death Unpacked By Jeremy Renner
Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Mayor of Kingstown season 4, episode 3!Mayor of Kingstown star Jeremy Renner has explained how season 4’s shocking death scene was inspired by his 2008 war film The Hurt Locker. Mayor of Kingstown season 4 has seen a number of shocking twists since it began. The biggest of these was the death of Carney, who was killed by Cortez, a Colombian Mike let out of prison. In a pre-release interview with Jeremy Renner and Edie Falco, ScreenRant asked the pair about Carney’s death and what it means for Mayor of Kingstown season 4’s story twists. Renner revealed series creator Taylor Sheridan pulled inspiration from The Hurt Locker, specifically when it comes to how vulnerable every character is to death. ScreenRant: I’ll wrap with this, at the end of episode 402, the twists come very quickly. We have the death of Carney, a regular since season 2. What does a death like that mean for other twists we can expect later in the season?
Edie Falco: I think there’s a means to an end, and if that is something that has to happen, I think there’s a lot of collateral damage when your only focus is on getting what you need. And so I think she’s got a good way of just sort of putting the blinders on and moving forward. So that’s all I can say about that.
Jeremy Renner: Yeah, look, the show since episode one, season one, anybody’s on the chopping block at any time, and that was sort of something we kind set off. Taylor wanted to steal something from The Hurt Locker. He says, “I want to do something like that, that’s sort of bait and switch.” You think that because my brother played the mayor and I came to take his shoes. And in doing so, it really does kind of put a bunch of tension on the audience because anybody could really go at any time. And here’s another one that I guess put on the chopping block, and there’s I think quite a bit of that this season.
Carney’s death has already had major repercussions in Mayor of Kingstown season 4, episode 3. Mike doesn’t know who initiated the hit, despite having been able to protect law enforcement when they’re off-duty throughout the series thus far. He enlists Ian and Stevie to uncover the truth, though as of writing, the true culprit hasn’t been revealed.

Carney had been a regular on the cast of Mayor of Kingstown since season 2, introduced as a prison guard taking over for Ed Simmons after his death in season 1. Since then, he’s been a regular contact for Mike, but has always shown hostility and disdain for the idea of making any form of peace with criminal organizations. Season 4 sees him with a new job, training new character Cindy to watch out for Mike’s brother, Kyle, while he’s in prison. With his death, Kyle may be in more danger now that someone will kill outside the prison to make a statement. The Hurt Locker influence comes from how willing the show is to lean into death and darker themes. As for how the story will be influenced by Carney’s death long-term, it’s clear Mike has more to juggle right now than he realizes. This includes Nina Hobbs, the new Warden who refuses to work amicably with him, and Frank Moses, a Detroit gangster who’s teaming up with Bunny to gain full control over the town. With Carney’s death being such a core element of how Mayor of Kingstown season 4 began, it seems like the investigation into who killed him will be a key element of the remaining episodes. Since it’s uncertain how the storyline will play out, the show will likely keep up the mystery until it decides it’s time for Mike to get justice for his friend.
